Modirzadeh, Hafez – “In Convergence Liberation” – [Pi Recordings]
Modirzadeh composed these tracks, on which he performs sax, flute clarinet, karna, and other instruments. ETHEL (NY-based string quartet) furnishes the strings throughout, and other performers are listed on the CD sleeve. Although this music is classified as jazz, it is genre-bending in that it sounds classical, experimental, medieval, and Middle-Eastern as well. There are chanting, poetry, and distillations of familiar compositions through the ages, and a strong finish with “Love What You Create,” a wise piece of advice for us all. Be sure to read the liner notes to enrich your experience of each song.
