Leandre, Joelle – “Joelle Leandre At The Le Mans Jazz Festival ” – [Leo Record]

Thurston Hunger   11/17/2006   CD, Jazz

Five nights, five pairings back in 2005 for bassist Joelle
Leandre. Starts off with her creative coven, Les Diaboliques
having the most fun, especially with Maggie Nicols voice and
mind chasing each other further out. Francophile smiles
and great piano pluck from Irene Schweitzer. The mighty
William Parker is next to team up on disc, though not in
chronologically. He comes with a little of that secret funk
and as usually when two bassists touch base, it’s an amazing
exploration of the non-basic nature of that instrument.
On disc two, we get India Cooke in a pair, she’s a great
violinist who this time out eschews any folkiness, for an
icy sense of drama. On their third piece, things start out
with a great whiff, slap, and a rolling knock, before India’s
violin starts to buck like a horse in a chute, then a phase
of light pizzicatification, before things start to saw and
fly. Still in that piece, we get a tamer section later, and
hear how melodic Leandre’s playing can be…also how she
likes to rise to the higher registers, eventually soothing
medieval vocals work in to. Really a great improvisation!
Muted wanderings from Markus Stockhausen (yep Karlheinz’s
son!) are in the front of the next set, but the wild card
is Mark Nauseef’s percussion which after the other rousing
string work (and piano/vox) felt like water in a desert.
Splash a cymbal, rinse with a chime…and he adds hovering
electronics via a “cheap Casio!” Leandre resonates deeply
on their first collaboration, and then whirls on the second.
A fourtet to conclude, with “Just Now Eight” the *rocker*
which gets mousey at the end. Paul Lovens on that panicky
percussion! Leo roars, and Leandre scores!
