Ich Bin N!ntendo – “Look” – [Va Fongool]

Thurston Hunger   8/16/2014   A Library, CD

Heavy duty traffic jams fueled by the nitro-guitar work of
Christian Winther. Bassist Magnus Nergaard adds flames
and those kind of Ruins-style maxxed-out bass notes
high on the neck. Frequently those two are in a hell-race
through sprawl city. Buckle the fuck up. I prefer their
occasional scenic routes and when drummer Joakim Heib??
Johansen (from the excellent Moe) is given a more
prominent role. There are times when a voice shouts
words or weather conditions into the fray, that style
plus some of the effects he employs reminded me of
the Dweebs. The beginning of “Star City” has that
kind of effect and a guy pretending to vomit before
a jumpcut to frenzy-fi overload for a few minutes
but then a nice section with a bit more space and
a whole lotta drums. Kind of a shame that Winther
either goes for very simple repetitve “riffs” (often
just rythmic same note hammer) versus balls-out
blitzkrieg-prov. “Live and Let Live” has nice Gary
Lucas percolating intro, earthquake bass and makes
some progress towards a Zu song. The best songs
is probably 4 minutes embedded in the 13 min opener.
“Let’s Toast” delivers punk noise punishment. “Look”
demands a listen, especially for its pyrotechniques
