David-Ivar Herman Dune ” Demented Abduction Novascotia Runs For Gold”

Half of the brother project Herman Dune, David-Ivar Herman Dune has crafted his second solo album. Eight tracks of heartbreak, humour and insight, recorded with an intricate texture made up of guitar, ukulele, recorder, fiddle, piano, drums and the backup of the Dune’s little sister Lisa Li-Lund. Released in 2005 (following up his first solo album “Ya Ya”) “Demented Abduction, Novascotia Runs For Gold” is a compelling collection of songs with reoccurring themes of Novascotia, gold and love gone wrong. This is anti-folk, folk music. Track 1 confuses me, it doesn’t really go anywhere and then just ends. Track 2 mentions WFMU. The chorus in track 3 “I’ve been in the house too long” reminds me of the Mama’s & the Papas. Sheer Wonder (track 4) reminds me of the Kinks and is one of my favorites. Track 6 has a very Neil Young “Dead Man” guitar sound, it’s 4 minutes long but feels longer (in a good way.) In track 7, David sings of being in a vortex and having his ass beaten, getting stabbed with a dagger and robbed but the thieves not stealing his wallet with his girlfriend’s picture, you think it is uplifting until he tells the girlfriend she can set it on fire?!”Whatever burns the best baby.” (Maybe she is a pyro.) Track 8 is written by Lisa and she provides the lead vocals and David the backup, accompanied by piano, a bit sad and quite beautiful and definately one of my other favorites…”Why wake up? When I am not going to be blessed by your eyes today”… The CD is accompanied by a 28-page comic book by David referencing the lyrics and songs. This is a very unique and entertaining release.
