Rockin’ Jelly Bean’s Jumpin’ Jukebox [coll] – [Dionysus Records]

Thurston Hunger   7/9/2014   12-inch, A Library

A blast from the past, late 1990’s…Japan generated, but Western
radiated rock. Put together by cartoonist, Rockin’ Jelly Bean,
and his band is on here with the second to last track, Jackie
and the Cedrics’ “Hurry Up.” One big name for KFJCeerkers, is
the man giving the closer, Guitar Wolf. Not all of the songs
on here go for broke as the Wolf does, blues amped up and deep
in the red on “Motorcycle Baby.” RJB’s description on the
back nails that piece as JET CHAOS ROCKIN’ ROLL. In fact all
of the descriptions are pretty excellent if you are looking
for a guide. Some of the covers come through more clear, the
take on Roky Erickson’s “Starry Eyes” for example. The band
names and members all kick into the fun had on this party of
a record. One down note is the dedication to vocal/guitarist
Akko from Lulu’s Marble, as she died in a car crash. Their
take on “Blue Mau Mau” was scrambled well and capped off with
killer screams. Go Devils serve up some sloppy and trippy
“LSD”, good guitars, surfy Chuck Berry chunks from The
Fabulous Mach Kung-fu (and their names Left Guitar : Very,
Right Guitar : Shake and Drummer : Goto!!!). Another name
of note “Dixied The Emons” (no typos there) mix surf and
harmonica. Many of the bands getting their KFJC debut here.
Rockin’ Jelly Bean’s artwork captures the mood.
