Album Review

Ferrian, Stefano / Quinteros, Cecilia / Pissavini, Luca – “dEFYing eRRorS” – [Bunch Records]

Thurston Hunger   6/6/2014   CD, Jazz

Excellent trio, with Stefano on tenor, Luca (the label
owner by the way) on double bass, and Cecilia just ripping
on the cello. Fans of Fred Longberg-Holm and his at times
aggressive free-form are going to fall big time for the
fury that Cecilia pries from her cello. On the two closing
tracks, she’s super scrapy and sharp. Like a guitarist on a
feedback freakout, but she’s all organic. Often times Stefano
is setting the soothing lines down while she’s flying at angles.
But some times like on #2, they flip roles and Stefano is darting
quick lines, while Cecilia saws more slowly, but not gently. The
secret on that track and much of the album is bassist Luca, #2
has a pretty sorrow to it, partially from Luca’s steady hand,
descending and breathing, descending and breathing. Stefano’s
tone on that is truly excellent, getting an almost effect
processing sound somehow. Track 6 is 47 seconds of fun, love
how they wrap that up. It is followed by the most “chamber
jazz” piece, with beautiful ripples in the melodies. But make
mistake this is a fine flamer of a free jazz album.
