Album Review

Dahga Bloom – “No Curtains” – [Captcha Records]

Thurston Hunger   6/6/2014   A Library, CD

First came across this as another fine Skrot Up cassette,
furiosly fuzzled, galaxy-guzzled space rock. Like a lot of
space rock, the molten blues core is apparent, beneath the
screeching scorch of guitar pedals and some assorted flying
synth saucer drops on top. Not too shabby for a quintet
that has their launching pad in Orange County. “Space is the
Place” takes a sacred Sun Ra line, and turns it into an alien
cheer in a super reverb tube. The album is dizzy with reverb,
so much so that an army of three bassists storms your ears
and you feel only bliss. (One of the bassists, Zach Nelson,
splits time on violin…which may help with the soaring
strength to these songs. Drummer Sean Yakubovsky is vital,
keeping the pace Warp Factor Five at a minimum. Vocalist
(and synth dropper) Lucas Drake often is singing through
astrophonic effects… exhorting anthems, I’d bet my re-entry
rockets these guys trance blast jam these numbers extendo
live. Fans of Janitors/Chrome/Underworld should dig.
