Spark Trio – “Short Stories In Sound ” – [Utech]

Max Level   10/23/2006   CD, Jazz

Two horns plus drums, serving up nine pieces of recorded-at-home free jazz playing. Matt Lavelle doubles on trumpet and bass clarinet, which seems a weird combination for one guy; but more power to him as he gives the group two very different sounds, both of them pretty exciting. Ras Moshe (tenor/alto sax) is always creative, never hogging the spotlight; in fact when I hear him play I tend to think it would be OK if he stepped out front a bit more. Todd Capp’s drumming isn’t about pulse as much as it’s about propulsion, pushing the music forward from all sides at once, in a somewhat Cyrille-like fashion. As far as what they play within each piece, nothing seems to be off limits; their M.O. seems to be: if you feel it, play it, and we’ll make it work. They never sound as if they’re running out of ideas. I get the feeling they could explore a tune for hours and keep coming up with new things.
