Zag Men, The – “Crime Spree” – [Vetoxa]
abacus 3/16/2014 A Library, CD
Ever hear of horrorbilly hounddogs Pine Box Boys? Local loonies singing songs about Frankenstein, Pukin Blood and Buckets of Guts? Well before they were country crooners they were rippin rock’n’roll a new one with rompin improv scrap-funk-skronk-punk sorta nonsense. A whole bunch of guitar shredding, bass blasting and a deluge of drums from Les Raww, Col. Leather, and Dodds respectively. A collection of live tracks from throughout 2003 brought together here for one big cartoon crime caper of shriek freak jazz creep chaos. Smoke filled balloons and heavy metal nihilist noir starting things off with the title track, a whole mess of toxic sludge that’ll come back to bite us throughout. Magic and Ecstasy bring us that nice wackjob exorcism with a Morricone wild-west appeal. All instrumental tracks except the sultry sing-along escapism on South of the Border and Bones & Boulders’ mongolian deep-throat drone ritual. Some serious gutter kid role modelling for all us with that FIY ethos, cuz fuck it.
