Album Review

Weisman, Chris – “Fresh Sip” – [Feeding Tube Records]

Thurston Hunger   3/14/2014   12-inch, A Library

Dear Mr + Mrs Weisman,
Sorry, I’m not an entertainment mogul, just a random radio DJ. Instead
of writing a proper review of your son’s “Fresh Sip” double LP
(from an earlier cassette) I thought I’d just post this open letter.
Your son *probably* won’t make as much money as Justin Bieber
but I have a hunch the overall happiness he’ll generate in the ears
of the people like myself and KFJC listeners will far exceed the
former. You’ve surely found yourself humming along to Chris’ songs,
don’t be ashamed, they are tantalizingly catchy. His voice is pure
and plaintiff, Mom I’m guessing he got that from singing along with
you? Dad, mybe you helped him appreciate the little bitter twists of
life as they turn up in his lyrics and his fine use of inner dischord
on his guitar. He reminds of me of Marc Ribot with the wrong steps
and half-note intervals that somehow deliver us to the right place.
Thanks for driving him to flea markets where he bought cheap and
charming electronics, used here on “Mr. Man” and that “Elf” number.
We can even hear the family Buick on “Mr Man.” Did one of you buy
him an Arto Lindsay album? If not yet, maybe for Easter? Steely Dan
T-shirts already happened, right? Nice work on sending him to summer
camps (did Simon Joyner always get the bottom bunk?) Great job
raising him and he’s got som fine foster parents via the Feeding Tube
family fodder.
-Thurston Hunger
PS At least he’s not a radio DJ.
