Connections – “Year One” – [Anyway]

Thurston Hunger   3/5/2014   A Library, CD

James Burke is *not* on lead vocals, instead it’s
Kevin Elliot singing, and his brother Adam (from
Times New Viking) pounding drum skins. Columbus
Connections to other Ohio pure-flame-of-rock
folks are strong. Hard not to think about GBV
when the songs kick up the anthem catchiness
and keep the chorus/verse/chorus quick and quit.
The first 15 come at you in a flurry of two
minute numbers, each chasing the tail of the
previous one. Never overplaying nor overthinking
and rarely overdubbing, immediacy is their current
as scrawled on the back “Pretty Much First Take.”
Just because our ears have been here before it
doesn’t mean their pulse of power pop/rock is
any the lesser. Sure, “1980 called” and I’m glad
these guys answered the phone. And if that means
a Mr. Rogers’ sample gets tacked on the best song
here (“Love St.”), no problem. Guitar solos, Ace
Frehley would approve so why not you. The money
they save on face paint, they can spend on beer.
Cleveland rocked, Dayton delights still but don’t
discount Columbus.
