Urheim, Stein – “Kosmolodi” – [Hubro]

mickeyslim   3/5/2014   12-inch, A Library

Full moon rising over low desert clouds, and a blues grumbling in the distance from Norwegian musician and composer Stein Urheim

The first thing I thought when I dropped the needle on this, was that it sounded like one-man desert blues guitar sounds. I listened for a bit and realized it was a whole group playing. Also as I began to listen, I heard a glimpse of optimism and hope in the music, and I think that desert blues has a hopelessness in the tone; so I soon realized everything I thought I knew was wrong.

So I started the A-side over and had to same kind of response. But then the B-side lost the blues flavor and stuck with the atmospheric meanderings until going into a dixieland jazz-ish number and back into spaced out daydreaming during a dust storm. B2 was the last surprise as it settled down into a somber bluesy slide number. Good for a mic bed, or just to mellow things out a bit. I liked A1 and B2 the best
