Space Lady, The – “Space Lady’s Greatist Hits, The” – [Night School Records]

humana   2/3/2014   12-inch, A Library

What do you get when you put together a Casio keyboard, a phase shifter, and a woman with an “ethereal” voice singing original songs and covers with a unique spin? You guessed it–Space Lady! The songs on this sound even more remarkable when you read the fascinating liner notes explaining how the Space Lady supported her family by busking for close to two decades in San Francisco, Boston, and Colorado. The winged helmet with blinking red light she wore may have been her trademark, but her scrappy talent and indomitable spirit are what make this addition to our library a rare gem.

I remember seeing her in the 80s. She would set up by Market and Powell. I don't remember her having any recordings then but maybe she did and I've just forgotten. She was a legend even then. Great stuff.

She used to play in the Castro back in the 80s. We lived around the corner from her in the Mission. :) Thanks!
