Golden Hours, The – “The Mystery & Her Crew” – [Self released]

ophelia necro   7/11/2006   A Library

Trio out of Portland, OR; Bryan, Eliza and Raf, they formed in 2004 and put together a six song cassette. One of the songs ended up on a Valentine’s Day comp for Not Not Fun records. Synthesizer, guitar (both acoustic and electrical), glokenspiel, bass, organ, violin and voice are employed in these tracks. Tracks 1, 3, 5 & 7 are sung by Eliza and remind me of Mirah, the lyrics are pretty, sad and morbid, songs about being being drowned “Ships at Sea” and “Drop Anchor” (actually two approaches to the same song) , strangled in “Shallow Breath” and more death in “White Sheets”- “White sheets, under a grove of trees, outside of school, covering dead bodies”. Tracks 2 & 4 are sung by Brian, track 2 about a young child falling through thin ice on a lake and drowning. The music is delicate and deceptively sweet for the subject matter. A nice simple release, look forward to an album-length cassette tape in late 2006! I’m serious.
