Far-Out Fangtooth – “Borrowed Time” – [Siltbreeze Records]
Naysayer 11/18/2013 12-inch, A Library
Sophomore album by Philly psych freaks Far-Out Fangtooth pushes the sound forward to a dirtier, grungier more twisted place. The labels fly around when trying to figure out what their sound is: psych goth, grunge psych, psych punk. Whatever, it has psych in it. Why did this originally remind me of Zodiac Mindwarp? Maybe the cover. But FOF go beyond the Warp. Slow, dirge, fast, layered, trashed out, full sounding: modern psychedelia with a messed up sense. Lots of guitar. Lyrics tell tales of bad relationships, or better yet, wanting a bad relationship, cruelty, falling down that black hole. Call it a bad acid trip. You can almost smell the old sweat emanating from those thrift shop shirts they are wearing. Groovy with a knife in your back.
