O Paradis – “La Boca Del Infierno” – [Punch Records]

Naysayer   11/9/2013   A Library, CD

O Paradis is Demian Recio from Barcelona. Recio likes to explore darker themes. These themes are expressed in his lyrics. These themes are expressed in his instrumentation. These themes are demonstrated with a beat sometimes. Though this might seem to be what most artists are doing these days, Demian puts a twist on it. Okay, lets break out of this static review and tell it like it is: “La Boca Del Infierno” is a stunner. I think it’s the most interesting, challenging, exciting and oddly listenable work he has put out. From vagina cover photos, to pubic hair cd photo, to full frontal insert, the standards are set high. And Recio delivers. “La Boca Del Infierno” (the mouth of hell) is printed under the full on cover photo: the challenge and question is set. Through ten songs issues are sung about. If you don’t know Spanish (I only understand a bit), the music will keep you guessing and interested. There are field recordings of children playing at the park distorted through electronic fidgeting, there is backmasking, there are electronic beats, glitches, pops, some IDM techniques, oddball sounds….. and it all sounds so easy and comfortable. Recio’s vocals, all sung in Spanish, pull it all together keeping a unified force through all that is going on. It’s an entertaining and enjoyable challenge to listen to this 2005 release. Dive in.
