Axelrod, Lawrence – “Six Brandenburg Fantasias, The” – [Innova/American Composers]
humana 11/8/2013 A Library, CD
Axelrod composed these fantasias to accompany the Brandenburg concerti of J. S. Bach, and they feature his fresh approach that shines brightly in the classical style. It’s like reading modern sequel to a favorite classic–there is a respectful nod to the inspiring creator, rounded out nicely by the innovation of the new improviser. Strings, harpsichord, and various assortments of horns interpret Axelrod’s pieces and and constitute a worthy aural experience.
