Strummin’ with the Devil – [coll] – [CNH]

ophelia necro   6/20/2006   A Library

I bet you didn’t know that Ophelia Necro was a major Van Halen fanatic in the 8os complete with pics of David Lee Roth in buttless leather chaps pasted up in my locker in the 8th grade. Well, maybe you didn’t need to know that. Anyway, here is a bluegrass collection (tribute album if you like) of Van Halen classics. Pretty straightforward Bluegrass renditions of songs by Van Halen. It kicks off with “Jump” and “Jamie’s Cryin'” sung by Roth himself! No appearance by Eddie! WA?! I am not very familiar with the artists on here but all seem to be very proffesional, capable musicians. Track 7 is an instrumental version of Hot for Teacher, it is great- toe tapping, knee slapping fun! Iron Horse does some strong versions. Also, I like ” I’ll Wait,” “And the Cradle Will Rock,” and “Could this Be Magic?” but I am not particularly fond of the cover of Ice Cream Man which is a Tom Waits (play his instead) song originally. Great fun! What’s next? A hip-hop tribute to Judas Priest? I’m in.
