Kaiser, Jeff – “Nothing Is not Breath ” – [New Winds]

Thurston Hunger   5/29/2006   CD, Jazz

I’ve definitely dug everything I’ve heard
from trumpeter and SoCal scene leader Jeff
Kaiser. He’s cooked up a Double Quartet,
hold the cheese. Despite the numbers this
oft has a serious spaciousness instead of a
Glenn Spearman WHOMP. Flute is such a lithe
instrument, Gene Doi launches this one long
flowing and live ’97 performance w/ a theme
tenser than that of Mission Impossible.Bowed
bass warns us…vibes work in, overall
combines for an enchanted forest feel. At
times, suddenly brass appears (#4) like a
clearing in this forest, some huge pagan
statue reaching upwards. More rigidly built,
left as a landmark, then we’re back in darker
sonic underbrush, with occasional tangled
patches of horn chasing clarinet chasing
trombone and so forth. Inspired! -Thurston Hunger
