Red – “Felk ” – [Rectangle]

Thurston Hunger   5/29/2006   A Library, CD

Red is the color of the hair of Olivier
Lambin, and red are his blood-flecked vocal
chords as well. Red are the cheeks of his
daughter(?), who adds an angry innocence to
some of these ghosty cuts of scrappy guitar
and twinkle-drone bliptronics. But it’s
Red’s sullen voice here, that can waver
like David Thomas shadow boxing Alan Vega
in Residents’ costumes. So eerie, it’s down
right calming. So naked, it could only be
recorded at home. He sings in English, even
does some well-known covers…that completely
surrender themselves to him. He could sing
“Route 66” and you’d swear it was an original.
I think he knows our dirty American secrets.
Soaked in cognac, dangerously near the flame.
