M.O.B. Trio – “Loose ” – [Omnitone]

Thurston Hunger   5/29/2006   CD, Jazz

M………att Wilson drums
O………had Taylor tenor sax
B……….ob Bowen upgright bass
Not a SexMob but one with plenty of appeal.
The MOB mentality here is one that allows them
to swing like monkeys from more structured
musical cages. Choppy drums from Matt, bulging
bass lines from Bob and then Ohad on top, but
never over the top. Eskelineation in some ways,
but with that unshakable bass presence, sinewy
and chewy, really I think that’s what got this
band caught in Spidey’s web. Like Ellery, two of
these guys spent some time in academia, indeed
Bowen has gone on to teach himself. Little
pensive pacing on “Yurname.” Funk in the name
and all over the place on “Funk Assembly.”
“Compulsion” was the richest cut for me, languid
but focused…like a train ride in the ride…
Afterglow music. -Thurston Hunger
