5000 Mile Split [coll] – [Great Plains Records]

Naysayer   8/18/2013   A Library, CD

Great Plains Records continues to celebrate, promote and nurture cassette culture with this split from Little Green Monster based in Japan and Wuv from Albany, California. Both bands’ sets consist of four tunes each, three originals and one cover, a style that shows up in a number of Great Plains recordings. These are DIY, low fi, garage band recordings which stick to the basics but are fun to listen to. Little Green Monster is one person who on this set is joined by several Bay Area musicians who joined in on the recording. Guitar, drums, bass, straight up with the common off key, slightly strained vocals. Why do off key vocals work so well? Track two is with acoustic guitar and a slightly off horn. Nice. Wuv sounds more like the Pixies with Black Francis vocal stylings, which is not a bad thing. Strained vocals (again). Good garage guitar work. A nice effort by both bands.
