This Chicago duo Michael O’Neill and Alexis Gideon offer 10 tracks in their debut self-titled release. Elements of electro-clash and rap with frenzied guitar riffage. Autograph (1) begins the album with strong beats, language and outbursts of guitar. Miss Adventures (2) has a sense of humor, posing the question “with friends like these, who needs enemas?” Track 3 is an instrumental homage to Bruce Springsteen. Buildings (4) is an 8:51 long track quite different than the preceding tracks more math rock at this point with some noise elements. Dylan (5) is a nice but strange instrumental piano piece with slide guitar. Stroller Contoller (6) again melds elements of electro with rap. Dusty (7) is a sad song with interesting instrumentation and beautifully simple lyrics. Little League (8) is back to rap style vocals with rock elements. Ra Ra (9) repeats “going down again” short guitar riffs and mellows with bells and the sound of the ocean. Promised Land (10) begins with fake record scratches and singing in gospel style, but within a minute and forty seconds the guitar comes in, throaty gurgling, drums and an almost hippie jam…then about six minutes in it’s beat box, booming bass and rapping!…7 and a half minutes and it’s mellow hippie rock…all elements of the album are pretty much here for you all on this 11:18 long track. The music is really almost indescribable but to me it seems like these guys are two friends that have really different tastes in music and have decided to play together and the result is a very unique sounding album, the audio equivalent to a tug of war.
Language on tracks 1, 2 & 6!
