Album Review
Metallic Falcons – “Desert Doughnuts ” – [Voodoo Eros]
Thurston Hunger 5/13/2006 A Library, CD
Ethereal overdose, Nico appears at the seance, she just wants
to sing and not mess with the ouija. Thin tinny guitars and
weak-kneed keyboards paradoxically give this album strength
like a mother lifting a station wagon off her children. I
guess the “station wagon” is just the weariness of the world
and the children here are many notable sonic guests (Antony,
Jana Hunter, Devendra). One of the Falcons is either Coco or
Rosie, I get ’em mixed up. You can possibly triangulate how
the sound should feel based upon those hallowed guests, but
this album really has its own aspect of ambience. Langorous
songs, not afraid to stumble at times, vocals with an operatic
ache. This stuff might send chills down Jarboe’s spine,
assuming it has ripped its way out of her skin yet. Good
music to get lost to sea at, and I’m not just considering the
washes on “Ocean.” Antony’s work on “Nighttime and Morning”
is sublime. A very consistent release. God this would sound
beautiful on a 78. -Thurston Hunger
