Album Review

Loscil – “Plume ” – [Kranky]

Thurston Hunger   5/3/2006   A Library, CD

This is one of those albums, like Labradford and many others
that I’m sitting there, soaking in it and I wonder what is so
cranky about Kranky. This music just envelops you, with a
womblike wonder. Scott Morgan is the main man for Loscil,
the artwork, album and song titles and above all the sound
here is amorphous, vapor trails of keys, blotting up your
head, leaving the patterns to you for Rorschach analysis.
Not for from the Robert Rich realm of sleep concerts, this
is so soothing it’s almost unsettling. Bits of glitch work
into tracks, but they’ve already been proven to oddly add
to the soporific drone powers of music. Stephen Michael Wood
smoothly slices some ebow guitar into the mix, whiff o’
Fripp. The minimal adjustments to melodies are better seen
as tone tinting. Overall a warm chill. -Thurston Hunger
