Flaherty, Paul / Corsano, Chris – “Beloved Music, The ” – [Family Vineyard]
File under Free Jazz Fireworks. These duet performances reveal the mastery these cats (Flaherty- sax, Corsano- drums) have of their individual instruments, and, especially, how absolutely tuned in to one another they are. There’s just no way Flaherty would play this way without Corsano, and vice versa. When Flaherty heads skyward, exploring the highest register of his horn, Corsano lends support by concentrating on his cymbals. When Corsano is feeling it with extended tom tom rolls, Flaherty is right there with him, grunting percussively on the low end. Three long pieces (11-18 minutes each) provide many noisy, roller-coaster style thrills, with gentler parts that sound like nothing so much as energy gathering for yet another screaming ride downhill at 100 MPH.
