Frankie & The Pool Boys – “Adventures of Cap’n Coconuts, The” – [Double Crown Records]

Cousin Mary   6/5/2013   A Library, CD

There’s a lot of talk these days about how surf music is evolving, that maybe it’s not surf anymore, maybe should be called instrumental rock, etc., etc. This album from San Francisco Bay Area surf stalwarts (and an all-star cast of “extras”) assembled here as Frankie and the Pool Boys is a sterling example that argues “this sounds great, so who cares?”. All except one of the tracks is written by a band member. Classic surf influences such as Western, horror, spy, and TV themes mix with other sounds, even a little soul. Expertly played, arranged and recorded.
