Dorner, A. & F. Lonberg-Holm – “Object 1 ” – [Locust Music]

Max Level   2/18/2006   A Library, CD

Trumpeter Dorner and cellist Longerg-Holm with five duo improvisation pieces that seem more influenced by environmental sounds than by jazz or anything musical like that. Tracks are between 7-14 minutes in length. With this “Object” series, Locust is looking for improv that is less abstract than usual, asking the musicians instead for playing that is more “representational”. To that end, the musicians were provided with mundane objects and asked to describe them with sound; in this case, a chest x-ray, a scouring pad, and a bowling ball (see front cover if you don’t believe me). Difficult to say whether or not such an esoteric concept succeeds; both players squeak, rumble, scrape, rub, tap, etc? which may or may not bring to mind a scouring pad and such. But why not? It makes for some adventurous listening so I’m down with it.
