Album Review

Tsigoti – “Read Between The Lines… Think Outside Them” – [Post-Consumer]

Cousin Mary   2/5/2013   A Library, CD

Tsigoti is guitar, bass, drums and Thollem McDonas on piano and vocals. Most tracks include angry yelling of indignant provocative lyrics. On first listen, I couldn’t decide if it was annoying because it was really not very good. On second listen, I decided that it was musically interesting and cleverly designed to make us squirm. Has a punk rock vibe and it might be called “punk experimental”.

PGM: Language on tracks 7 and 8. Tracks 5, 10, 16, and 18 have few to no “vocals” and are a bit more palatable.

This is an odd review: it seems Cousin Mary had nothing better to listen to than something she didn't like, and then write about what she didn't like about it. (Since when did 'palatable' become necessary to enjoy punk music?)

I prefer to listen to and share my thoughts about music I enjoy. I have no time to waste on tunes I don't like. Thus stated, obviously I like this album. The lyrics are thought-provoking and the voice is well suited to the words: strong, angry, playful, energetic. The music is driving, has a great beat without falling into boring repetitions, whether it's moving fast or thoughtfully.

Come to think of it, perhaps Cousin Mary, through her review, is simply re-enforcing the title of the album: read between her lines and think outside them... If that is the case, I need to give her more credit.*

*But if that is not the case, why is it that a person who doesn't like an album reviewing it? This baffles me. It seems there should be a dj at a station like KFJC who is familiar with the context/genre in which this album exists. The ignorance of this review reflects poorly on the station, and it seems Cousin Mary didn't take that into account when she posted the review. I like KFJC and want to know that its djs respect the station and what it's about: "KFJC's mission in, as much as we can agree on such a thing, is to be a conduit for new and interesting audio art and information, especially the sorts that are unavailable elsewhere."
