Supersilent – “6 ” – [Rune Grammafon]

Thurston Hunger   1/3/2006   A Library, CD

Unearthly Deathprod’d delights. Helge Sten also
records as Deathprod, his live warping of spacious
trio improvs captures the dynamics of God Speed,
and cloaks the sound in a sort of Popol Vuh caul.
Thus you get mysticism, with an eerie feeling of
precision. Stale Storlokken’s keyboard work here
is evermore melodic, charted rather than diffuse
and hovering. Pieces never rampage, but have an
ominousness that is as tangible as a corpse in
your bed. Still there is beauty in the way the
sheets wrap it, that’s the lilt and wisp of Arve
Henriksen’s trumpet. At the end his trumpet can
no longer speak, so he’s left to wordless mutter
and whistling. This is an absolutely gorgeous
release, the best yet from a unique Norweigan
project. Jazz concrete? -Thurston Hunger
