Album Review
Friedberger, Matthew – “Matricidal Sons of Bitches” – [Thrill Jockey Records]
mickeyslim 11/7/2012 A Library, CD
62 minutes, 45 tracks of a strange soundtrack album Friedberger throws together. First listening to the album driving around, it felt like there was some sort of narrative happening. Then looking it up, seems Friedberger intentionally wrote this soundtrack to an “unmovie” about killing moms… yup.??The track titles kind of tell the story in itself if you read them straight through.
The songs track well through each side (check CD), but even though they track (anywhere from 0:14 to 2:30 and two 4:00 long tracks) they each have different themes going on, so you could potentially play a few tracks.??What you get is melodic piano over electronic bass poundings through dramatic scenes. Sometimes frantic like a chase scene (2), or strange wedding bells and explosions (11), theres even a couple groovy guitar drum songs (16 and 38).
Track 25 sounds underwater, we have international harp sounding music (19, mixed in others). The album feels long since the themes change so rapidly, you really feel like you watched a movie rather than listened to a record. Lots of cool and weird sounds for everyone…
