Hwang, Jason Kao – “Burning Bridge” – [Innova Recordings]
Cousin Mary 11/5/2012 CD, Jazz
Burning Bridge symbolizes the concurrence of life and death. Its five parts combine instruments that are typically used for jazz, others identified with classical, and some that come from Chinese music. Although jazz seems to dominate, it straddles these genres as well. Thoughtful and engaging – some motifs were inspired by Hwang’s memories of his mother who passed away in 2009.
