Album Review

Apse – “S/T ” – [Acuarela Discos]

Max Level   12/25/2005   A Library, CD

These young New Englanders explore slow-ish, dramatic themes that remind me of GYBE, Mono, Mogwai, and Tarantel. Plenty of quiet parts and big buildups. The band doesn’t seem to be following a strict formula, though, and they create some nice contrasts by changing things up from time to time. The sparse vocals serve as sonic decoration since the lyrics are mostly unintelligible. I like the way the tracks sort of drift in and out of dreamy soundscapes.

While a few of the bands mentioned are brought up in several
online interviews and reviews, I don't believe the band has ever sited GYBE, Mono or Mogwai as a direct influence.

hey Robert. thanks for checking out our reviews. I no longer have my notes from when I did research for the original review, so I can't say now where I read those things or who said them. I don't doubt that you know what you're talking about, so I must have gotten something wrong. I'll remove the incorrect information. thanks again.

Max, thanks for making the appropriate changes. I do appreciate it. While we respect the bands you've mentioned, and have shared the stage with some of them, we had no manifestos when we created the album. We drift along. The material we're working on now, is much different than anything 'post-rock', for example. I think that the only influence I would credit, is Tarentel, as they are a band that undergoes constant changes in investigation, as well.

By the way, thank you for the kind words, as always, the notation is appreciated.
