Jet – “Jet / Even More Light Than Shade” – [RPM]

Thurston Hunger   10/11/2012   A Library, CD

While some may say there are no such things as “guilty pleasures”
at KFJC, if this sucker gets called to the witness stand, I’ll
be put away for every year since 1975. Holy Velvet Goldmine flashback.
I see guys in white pants and gals with hair all crispy from waves
of permanents. If this summons Don Kirschner to your bedside
playing the part of Ghost of Glam Past, you are not alone.
Martin Gordon wrote most of the songs on the first disc, and
he had tea and crumpets with Sparks shortly before launching this
Jet. Perhaps more importantly, that first disc was produced by Roy
Thomas Baker, and I’d be surprised to see a Queen fan reject the
music here. (The lyrics may be another story…) You want
hyperdramatic singing, piano used as sort of jaunty faux-pompous
humor, you want a talented guitarist (don’t know if Davey O’List
doubles as an astrophysicist). You want *tons* of production
(I know many KFJC’ers don’t these days, and I understand why)
well have a listen to the first disc. It’s got that kind of
punchy lower end, lots of crisp quiet stops, slick background
vox… The works with extra cheese! The second disc might be
better approached after spending time with the first, if you
are still interested you can catch rougher takes, but still a
smarmy charm and recognizable arena rock moves. I’ll be turning
in my counterfeit “cool” badge, but this was indeed a pleasure for
me. Guilty as charged.
