Echocord Jubilee Comp. [coll] – [Echocord]2011 compilation of artists signed to Echocord, the Copenhagen dub techno label founded by DJ Kenneth Christiansen in 2002. I don’t know much about dub, techno or otherwise, but I can tell you that this is sexy, reverb-heavy (duh) electronic dance music with echoes of ‘Protection’-era Massive Attack throughout (see me grasping for comparisons??). Some tracks similar to the ‘ambient dubstep’ of Burial et al., others more house-inflected and might go well with that awesome Philip Bader record we added a few weeks ago. For evidence of stylistic variation compare the ominous build of Onmutu Mechanicks’ ‘Calyx’ (4) to Brendan Moeller’s birdsong-sampling ‘Farmhouse’ (5).‘ Some scarce use of song samples but no original vocals on anything here. General impression one of being stoned and lonely amid a crowd of 20,000 hot young Europeans. These are club-length pieces with the shortest track clocking at 6:18, longest at 9:22. My personal favorites were the more house-influenced outings: Deadbeat’s harmonium-sprinkled ‘House of Vampires’ (3), Stephen Hitchell’s ‘For Convextion’ (8) and Mikkel Metal’s ‘Wahomi’ (10). Grab a hash spliff/someone you want sexually and get on the fucking dancefloor! Comment on this review |
