Big Blood – “Old Time Primitives” – [dontrustheruin]

Maybe the best yet from this marvelous Maine duo+. An album
of other voices not quite summoned via EXP, but as present
as the magnet on your right temporal lobe. There’s the five
seconds of #9 which might be a thrift store find answering
maching cassette? There’s also a Herb Diamante-like mystery
singer (and I suspect mystery swinger) peppering the title
track & closing the album with a slice of Jerry Reed’s “A
Thing Called Love.” I might have heard whale whispers on the
fantastic “Leviathan Song” and definitely their daughter,
Quinnisa Rose launches the most rocking number with a sort
Human Skab-ette battle cry on “Away Pt. I” (That ends with
some backwards masking to boot). And of course throughout
Colleen pulls various voices out of her own throat and
Caleb twists those voices, the knobs and our ears. His
guitar playing on here comes in the waves of angry sea,
again varying the shadows and the strings, but keeping that
gritty donttrusttheruin vibe. They come up with such catchy
melodies that sparkle in the scratchy sound. They find the
eerie in beauty repeatedly, check out “Mark the Spot Spot”
and the underwater xylophone stumbling among other spots.
Almost all songs track, making for an excellent full album
listen, so if you dig one cut played on KFJC, track down a
copy for the full sonic hayride through the Maine moonlight.
