Zulus – “Zulus” – [Aagoo]

Four-piece out of New York deliver pound-o-rama rock.
How they ever afforded buying an airplane hanger in
NYC to record in, I can only imagine? Guitars must
have bridge-cable thick strings, the sound recalled
Gang of Four era for me. Heavy. Drums. The guitars
here aren’t bright and slashing though, but have
jet engine processing, and the vox are shouted
urgently into the void of space hiding in hangar’s
rafters. On “Tremolo” the band ties a riff to the
railroad tracks at 51 seconds in, and you hear
that train howl for 65 bars! Cool ghost siren on
“Kisses,” the band even thins out the sound for a
dip in a pool of reverb on that one. The band
even performs “Surgery” which had its recent KFJC
debut on the Lemon Session Singles 7″. That track
goes to show how catchiness can be merged with a
scrubbing of the killing floor sound. These stains
will not come out easily…
