Heaven Help The Child [coll] – [Drag City]

This is a very well-done tribute by Bill Callahan to Mickey Newbury, with Side A presenting Newbury’s 1973 recording of his song “Heaven Help the Child,” backed with Callahan’s cover of the same heart-wrenching tune. Newbury’s voice fills you with nostalgia, and then Callahan’s deep voice delivers the words just as sensitively, but with an authority you can trust and respect for his willingness to be compared with the original. Both are great, but I particularly like Callahan’s cover.
