Mitchell, Roscoe – “Solo Concert, The” – [Tizona]

Recordings from live concerts in 1973 and 1974 find Roscoe Mitchell playing solo on various saxophones shortly after his stint with the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Some tracks give a glimpse of his complex compositions that came later. Fine musicianship is on display; on Oobina it sounds like he is playing bass and soprano sax at the same time. Alto pieces tend to be the most abstract. I especially liked Eeltwo (parts one and two) and Tutankamen.
