El Ray – “Highwave to Hell (23 Golden Hits 2001-2006)” – [Green Cookie Records]

Released in 2007 to gather tracks from 5 previous releases going back to 2001, this entertaining surf band from Denmark takes common surf motifs such as horror, spy, and tiki and makes them sound fresh and different. Guitar gymnastics, reverb, twang and a nod here and there to punk abound. Nice organ (for example, track 13) and theremin on some tracks. Very well played, energizing!
