Only a cigarette company could so blamelessly target the young, “people who are alive” (see the liner notes), in such an intoxicating way. India’s Simla tobacco company sponsored the All-India Beat Contest, inviting Indian bands to compete with distinctly non-indigenous instruments. This CD contains the acts from these contests. Garage, surf (3), and late-60s rock characterize these peppy offerings. 4 is a cover of Zorba’s Dance. 7 is the closest to psychedelic track on the CD. Enjoy.
