Berger, Karl – “No Man Is an Island” – [Douglas Music]Karl Berger wrote and conducted this commission in 9 movements with the words of John Donne’s “No man is an island” in mind. Shortly before the performance the ensemble learned of cornetist Don Cherry’s death, so Movement 6 was spontaneously created using the words of Khalil Gibran. This piece sits at the intersection of jazz, experimental and modern classical. Excellent accordion, brass, reeds, strings, percussion with Berger’s piano and vibes provide both fine solos and ensemble playing. Haiku: This music is no/Island entire of itself/A moving ensemble.
