Trio Caveat / Sinton, Josh – Split [coll] – [Engine Studios]

This is a twofer…Trio Caveat is highlighted by James Ilgenfritz’s contrabass and a minimal setting that suggests quirky patterns in its spareness. The track titles are pretty descriptive, with “Introspective Athletics” (3) standing out. For the Josh Sinton portion of this split, the music takes a decided turn for the jazzier. Sinton starts off jarring, then morphs into sounds so reminiscent of Philip Glass melodies that you do a double take, then veers off into his own territory of mad jazz flair as interpreted through sax and clarinet.
