Gamble, Mike – “Loomer” – [Engine Studios]

“Guitarist seeking drummer and bassist” we’ve all
seen the classified ads, and they often don’t
end pretty. Mike Gamble bet on himself and his
array of delays, constructing loops and stacking
himself live and direct, never mind the four
track. Watercolored by reverb, sideswiping dub,
and tweaking the chill-out room with an actual
guitar. Liberterian improv? He never really rips
your ears off, favoring finger picked webs and
traces of melodies over brute sonic attack. Coming
out of New York, but it seems clouds from New
Zealand have made it to Gamble’s skies intact.
Check the drizzly “Star Strider” and the spacey
“Lookahead.” Reverse guitar spirals on “The Age
of Analog”, sorta Alastair Galbraith. Nice poison
darts on the closer “Cauda” and a hint of dancefloor
drum machines on “Impend.” For a one man show,
quite a variety in song and style, with drums not
tacked on like a third wheel. More variety in the
guitar tone would be cool…but this is a record
that can work for a lot of DJs in a lot of ways.
