Tormis, Veljo – “Litany to Thunder” – [Ecm Bmg Records]

Contemporary Estonian composer Veljo Tormis (pronounce VEL-yo TOR-mis) was born in 1930. He is primarily known for his choral work which is frequently based on folk songs from Estonia and other traditional sources. Liner notes provide a libretto in addition to Tormis’ extensive and highly readable notes on his music and its inspirations.

This work provides variety in mood and the size of the ensemble from piece to piece. Very affecting, can provoke feelings of sadness and fear. Unearthly beauty. Recommended to fans of Arvo Part and to those who should be.
