Wooley, Nate / Looney, Scott R. / Smith, Damon / Weasel – “Scowl” – [Ug Explode]

The title “Scowl” might lead you to expect dour and humorless sounds from this trumpet, bass, piano and drum quartet. I think “Skirmish” might be a better title since it often sounds like the instruments are fighting. High energy, occasional goofiness, and very agile and inventive percussion make it engaging. On the other hand, it’s strong stuff and unapologetic free improvisation.
