Necro Deathmort – “Music of Bleak Origin” – [Distraction Records]

Much closer to say a Macro Dub infection than anything damned or
doomed or impaled upon the gates of black, blacker, blackest metal.
Guitar is generally subsumed beneath the beat programming, and
those digital drums are where the reverb dips in. Necro Deathmort
(really, that is the name they chose? Had I not already spent worst
bandname on the otherwise excellent Natural Yogurt Band I’d be tempted
here) is a duo from London, Matthew Rozeik and AJ Cookson, this is their
second full-length. Vocals are summoned whether the moan-drone in
the middle chasm of “Devestating Vector” or the hushed breaths on
“Temple of Juno” or the shoegazer trapped between the dance floor
and the fire bunker on “For Your Own Good.” At times the guitar
(samples?) do let a big sound cavern rip, so I can see why they might
cite Earth or SunnO as an influence. But the danceability that rises
again and again, is going to ward off some less openminded gargoyles.
That might be this album’s utmost charm, to embrace styles from such
disparate fields as to alienate many potential fans. Will Autechre
trekkers hang on through the Teutonic power chords of “In Binary”
and “The Heat Death of Everything” much less the distant screams on
those two as well??? And will Balthazar the Bloodthirsty hang around
through the pretty synths of the “Moon?” Necro Deathmort brings the
MDMA to the D&D marathon, but will they be invited back. I hope so…
