Livingston, James – “Fat Fingers” – [Helical]

It’s nice to know that there are people out there; good solid
creative people, who are WAY more disorganized than us at KFJC.
This 12″ showed up recently at the station, originally released
in 2007 and gone pretty much dormant since then, I can only
guess that James gave up on the MTV dream and realized he’s
a bit too off for the common frequencies. It’s very hard to find much info about him at this stage (we have something else that may be by him from a decade ago on Mesmer Detector, he is an enigma wrapped in a plain record sleeve buried in time). Even here at KFJC, this release is more like our own Uncle Al hosting a dance
party than a Belladonna or Goodwrench beat feast. I mean, it
does have a beat and synthesizers, but it sounds like it
would be more at home in a circus than a nightclub.?? And yes
that is a good thing…elephants are way cooler/heavier than
scenesters. But the more you listen to this, the more it
feels at home in a universe of Gang Gang Dance (with about
1/3 the clutter), or even Richard Kirk (with the dork wheel
pitched up high) or perhaps Otto von Schirach (with far less
scatalogical logic). It has a twisted feel, in sound and sample
(are those pygmy guitars grinding away), the rhythm less
twisted and sadly more four-ceful, but surely its delivery to
us, as twisted too. Mr. Livingston, we exhume…????
