Oliveros, Pauline – “to Valerie Solanas and Marilyn Monroe In Recognition Of…” – [Roaratorio]Pauline Oliveros was inspired by Valerie Solanas (who wrote the Scum Manifesto and attempted to murder Andy Warhol)and the suicide of Marilyn Monroe. She used their names in the title of this piece to bring attention to feminist principles and related problems of inequality. Included in this recording are both the 1970 Hope College premiere by a 14-piece ensemble, and a 1977 recording from Wesleyan University by a 43-piece orchestra. Traditional instruments as well as relatively early electronics are used in music that is mostly understated, using long sustained notes to good effect. Comment on this review |
