Out Hud “One Life To Leave” [Kranky]

Originally based out of Sacramento, CA, Out Hud devises indie electronica complete with catchy female vocals, bass slappin’ funky dub beats, techno rhythms, and post-punk pizzazz. Hardly surprising considering the band features Justin Van Der Volgen, Nic Offer, and Tyler Pope who concurrently play in ?!!!? (pronounced ‘CHK, CHK, CHK?). Though I must say, their sound is atypical of its members who previously fronted punk rock outfits before embracing disco-style techno! Then again, numerous rock bands have been adopting a more dance oriented sound lately. Perhaps, Out Hud is onto something. Apparently their live shows roused enough excitement to motivate habitually stoic indie crowds and get them movin’ to the groovin’. If that kind of response is produced using the sleek combination of cello, bass, drum machine, keyboards, and knob twisting, Out Hud is certainly doing something right! -Guy Montag
